L’aspetto di Pisa mi piace assai più di quel di Firenze. Questo lungarno è uno spettacolo così bello, così ampio, così magnifico, così gaio, così ridente che innamora: non ho veduto niente di simile nè a Firenze nè a Milano, nè a Roma, e veramente non so se in tutta l’Europa si trovino vedute di questa sorta.

Arno, that flows from the city of Pisa up to Bocca d' Arno (how is commonly called the mouth), famous for the enchanting landscape offered by its extreme point that embraces the characteristic wooden buildings "retoni" located on the cliffs of the mouth, with the Gombo beach behind it and against the spectacular scenery of the Apuan Alps; also the italian poet Gabriele D'annunzio described this beautiful setting in the poem Meriggio: ”La fuga delle due rive si chiude come in un cerchio di canne, che circonscrive l’oblío silente; e le canne non han sussurri. Più foschi i boschi di San Rossore fan di sé cupa chiostra; ma i più lontani, verso il Gombo, verso il Serchio, son quasi azzurri. Dormono i Monti Pisani coperti da inerti cumuli di vapore. "
